If their gift to the republic consists of revisiting the Communist and Socialist takeover threats from the 1950s and 60s, the Republicans will have to keep on acting like schoolchildren---name calling their opponents, organizing thoughtless rallies, and dividing the nation into Coastal and FlyOver districts which won't see eye to eye for decades to come. This is what bullies try to do in the schoolyard. A good swift punch in the nose may be in order, here. The People will decide their fate.
The columnists and blogosphere, obsessed with process at the expense of policy, have been predicting every which way, from Waterloo for the Republicans to another impending electoral realignment in favor of the conservatives and Tea Party Shoutemdowns. BobOnARoll has no idea what the future holds---except, of course, to reiterate my view that we should term limit each of them out of office after a set period.
Am no expert on legislative coalitions, but in all the focus on the events of the last 48 hours, I have seen nothing written to the issue of why did we have to put ourselves through all of it the last 12 months to achieve this particular outcome? Would welcome any insights on this.
In the meantime, I'm in the mood to celebrate. Aren't you?
