Hipsters

Am writing from a snowy, frigid Chicago, where I have stopped en route from Seattle to New York. Mom had surgery today; all is well and she will be up and about quickly. We are all grateful. And I am glad I could be here.

Our family is a bit topsy-turvy, as usual. Mom reads from a Kindle. Dad is driving a new hybrid. And their overly-educated son is still in the dying magazine publishing business. What's wrong with this picture??

Well, all credit to great parents and a great hometown. My challenges can wait another day or two. Cold as it is, Dorothy, you were right: there's no place like home.
