And success is..... ?

From today's NYT:

WASHINGTON — The top military commander in Afghanistan warns in a confidential assessment of the war there that he needs additional troops within the next year or else the conflict “will likely result in failure.”
....
“Failure to gain the initiative and reverse insurgent momentum in the near term (next 12 months) — while Afghan security capacity matures — risks an outcome where defeating the insurgency is no longer possible,” General McChrystal writes.

OK, fine. Tell us what success looks like, general. Or better yet, Barack, tell us ! 'Defeating the insurgency' sounds, sadly, like the words we used to read in communiques from SE Asia back in the day. If we stake the outcome on a defeat of the insurgency and therefore a stable, non-threatened normal government process in Afghanistan, we are there either for another 10 years or more and/or facing the prospect of 'failure' with each additional request for troops and materiel. There is nothing but trouble for us here, folks....
