During these last few broiling hot summer months in the UAE, I have been curious to know why the newspapers never report a temperature higher than 45 C, even though anyone with a thermometer or gauge in their car knows that it routinely passes 50 by noon.
The answer? Simple. It's not allowed by law to reach 50 C here. Apparently there's a provision in the labor laws that workers (indoors and out) have the right to stop working if the temp equals or exceeds 50-----perhaps a holdover from the days when aircon was not as pervasive as today. So, it's hot but---not to worry-- not really THAT hot ! Case closed.
As for the road and building construction workers here, they just keep on toiling through conditions that would level the rest of us. How they do it I don't know. Whether they should be required to do it----well, I think you know the answer to that.....
