The Yamanote Blues
A small item in this week's Times about the Tokyo subway system caught my attention. Seems as though suicide via leaping in front of incoming subway trains has become a problem there, sadly. The Japanese installed blue overhead lighting at the front and rear of the subway platforms on the Yamanote line, which is a rapid and convenient circle line I've traveled often around Tokyo city center, to try to ward off suicide attempts. Blue apparently has a calming and soothing effect on the Japanese and might reduce rash behavior---or perhaps move it more toward the center of the platform?? Ugly thought.....but interesting that a color we might associate with 'the blues' is considered soothing elsewhere.....
